Confirmo Booksellers
“Confirmo” – Latin – meaning to strengthen or encourage.
Confirmo Booksellers is a bookstore and classical tutoring center with the purpose of providing Bibles (a store favorite), good solid Christian reading materials, classical books, and a plethora of homeschool curriculum. In addition, Confirmo Tutorials has been established to help parents educate their children through the classical Christian model, that they might know and understand God better, thereby bringing glory to him.
We opened our doors in September of 2006 with the intent to be a place where people could find excellent books, books that are worth recommending to others, reading again and again, or placing in a personal library. These books cause you to stop and think, consider the level of your spiritual growth and encourage you to seek a closer relationship with God.
We also sought to support homeschool parents by providing a selection of solid classical courses such as Latin, Excellence in Writing, Omnibus and Fine Arts as well as great home school curriculum. Both the courses and curriculum have been chosen specifically to help parents build a solid Christian worldview.
So, are we a Christian Bookstore, a Classical Bookstore or an Education Center?
We are none of the above and all of the above. The owners, are Christians who strive to serve Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ and felt a calling to open a store that helps other believers continue building a solid Christian worldview through reading and education.
While the Bibles we sell are by far our favorite books; among the other books we love are those by Spurgeon, Calvin, Edwards, MacArthur, Sproul, and Piper. But we also like to have our patrons discover how classical literature by Dickens, Twain, and Stevenson can help us develop our worldview. But it does not end there. We truly love the combination of all these good materials into curriculum sources and courses.
When you come to visit you will find a nice quiet store with several places to sit and peruse our books and curriculum. If you are interested in classes you are welcome to view our classroom (so long as we are not teaching at the time of course) and ask questions regarding the courses, how they work and when your family might be able to participate in one. But come soon, we have already started a waiting list for 2010-2011!

Why Teach Latin?
Words are important! We desire that our children understand language and are effectual thinkers and communicators of the spoken and written word. The best method we have found is the teaching of Latin. The cornerstone of a classical Christian education, Latin's illumination of English grammar and vocabulary as well as its ability to improve thinking skills is unsurpassed.
Latina Christiana I:
Wednesdays 10:00 am- 10:55 am
A splendid introduction to Latin for the grammar student, LC I introduces vocabulary and basic Latin grammar concepts in a systematic, well thought out way. This weekly class is designed to introduce approximately 10 new vocabulary words each week along with a grammar concept, which is reinforced through worksheets & vocabulary study at home. A one hour class requiring 20-30 minutes per day at home and is suitable for students in 3rd grade and up.
Latin in the Christian Trivium I:
2:00 pm- 2:55 pm
This course is designed for students who have already completed Latina Christiana I and II and are ready for a new level of learning as well as the junior high student who has yet to have studied Latin. Geared for students 6th grade and up, this course reviews some of the basics of LC I & II as well as introduces new concepts and vocabulary words. Latin in the Christian Trivium was selected as our favored Latin program for both its thorough methodical presentation as well as its seamless integration with the much loved Shurley English.
Latin in the Christian Trivium 3:
Tuesdays & Thursdays 8:00 am - 8:55 am
A course for the serious Latin student, Latin Trivium 3 increases the student’s vocabulary to 1000+ words plus continues its rigorous pursuit of grammar including the Subjunctive mood, reflexive pronouns and subject infinitives. An excellent & worthwhile pursuit, Latin Trivium 3 will increase mental stamina through memorization and develop a deeper understanding of Latin and English grammar. Teacher approval required.
Confirmo is pleased to announce the formation of four writing/communication classes for the coming 2010-2011 school year.
While the classes are primarily grouped by age/grade level a certain amount of overlap exists that students might find their way into the level most appropriate for their own writing skill set.
Intro to IEW:
Wednesdays 11:00 am - 11:55 am
Moms with older children frequently tell us they wish they had focused on the art of writing when their children were younger. To help meet this growing need Confirmo is excited to offer an Introduction to Writing course using the acclaimed Institute for Excellence in Writing curriculum. Students will learn to take productive notes, to accurately summarize sources and to eloquently present material. This writing class is a perfect fit for those also enrolled in our VP History class as the writing will coincide with topics studied in History. Third through fifth graders will find themselves right at home in this illuminating class.
IEW Advanced:
Wednesdays 1:00 pm - 1:55 pm
Meeting once a week, this class will use Bible Based Writing Lessons to accomplish the purpose of IEW’s Structure & Style book. Covering topics like poetry, summarizing references, creative writing and formal essay writing students will learn the principles of writing in class while accomplishing theses skills by writing at home each week. Designed for students in the 5th-7th grades this class is sure to train students to more fully articulate their thoughts and observances.
Lost Tools of Writing A:
Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:00 am - 9:55 am
The Lost Tools of Writing by Andrew Kern of the Circe Institute continues to be the composition curriculum of choice here at Confirmo in our higher level classes. Lost Tools thoroughly teaches the three canons of writing: Invention, Arrangement, and Elocution. Meeting twice weekly this class is sure to assist students in gaining both discretion and discernment in their writing assignments. Assignments will be designed to dovetail with the Humanities programs offered by Confirmo though the class will stand on its own as well. The level A class is primarily for Jr. High students (7th - 8th grade) or the High School student with very little composition experience.
Rhetoric- Speech & Debate:
Tuesdays and Thursdays 3:00 pm - 3:55 pm
This class will help students who already have a basic grasp of the schemes and tropes taught in Lost Tools of Writing learn to better communicate through oral presentation. We will cover the ten aspects of Oratorio in an effort to further hone our persuasive speaking skills. Second semester we will embark on a study of Shakespeare culminating in a debate focused to determine who the real William Shakespeare was. Students enrolled in this course must also be enrolled in Humanities: Christendom. Offered to students in High School only. Teacher Approval required.
History, the study of past events and people, is a cornerstone of a solid education. At Confirmo we believe History is a great tool by which to learn about the character of the Lord and of man. By looking at the events of the past we have insight into the future.
What is Gileskirk? As taken from its website: The Goal of Gileskirk is to provide a strong Humanities or Liberal Arts survey of the disciplines of history, literature, philosophy, theology, civics, art, music, and architecture in four great epochs: Antiquity, Christendom, Modernity, and American Culture (American history).
Veritas Press Middle Ages, Renaissance & Reformation:
Wednesdays Noon - 12:55 pm
Designed for students in grades 3-6, we’ll continue our exploration of History through the Middle Ages! This class is designed to illuminate studies occurring at home with hands-on projects from great events in history such as the Crusades, Feudal System, the Renaissance & Reformation.
Christendom: Level: Jr. High
Tuesdays & Thursdays 10:00 am - 11:30 am
Designed as an introductory course, Humanities Christendom using the Gileskirk Christendom series along with Veritas Press’ Omnibus II, we’ll venture into Church History, studying the Middle Ages, Renaissance & Reformation and learn of its value to us today! The class will meet twice weekly for an hour and a half where we’ll watch the video lectures presented by Dr. George Grant and discuss selections from classic works of literature such as Confessions, Bondage of the Will and Canterbury Tales. This course is presented from a distinctly Christian worldview and is designed to incorporate the subjects of Literature, History & Theology.
Christendom: Level: High School
Tuesdays & Thursdays 1:00 pm - 2:45 pm
Humanities Christendom in the afternoons follows the same basic format as our earlier class but at a more in depth and thorough level for the older student. As we explore the ideas Dr. Grant presents in the Christendom lectures we will be reading selections including Dante’s Inferno, The Lord of the Rings Triology, Beowulf, and Confessions. We will also take a serious look at the creeds of the Church throughout this time period. This is a high school honors class awarding credit in History, Theology, and Literature.

Catechism: Grades K-2
Friday mornings 10:00 am - 10:30 am
Many protestants are under the mistaken belief that catechism is a Catholic class. In fact, the term “catechism” simply refers to a methodology of teaching where doctrine is imparted through the use of a question and answer format. We will be using the book Big Truths for Little Kids by Susan Hunt in our class. This text is based upon the Westminster Catechism, though it is simplified for this age group. The class will cover topics including: Who made you? What is meant by the atonement? and Why do you need Christ as your prophet? Students will need to work on the memorization of questions at home during the week. Handouts for this purpose will be provided.
Children’s Literature: Grades K-2
Friday mornings 10:30 am - 11:00 am
Adventurous learning, sterling character, and great fun, are all to be found in children’s literature. This class will seek to impart a working knowledge of the basics of literature into young minds through the use of well known and time tested stories. We will cover the topics of plot, character, setting, conflict, and theme. Additionally, we will discuss protagonists, antagonists, irony, satire, similes, and much more. We pray your young ones will develop an appreciation for fine story telling while learning about that which gives excellent literature its proper structure.
Primary Art: Grades K-2
Friday mornings 11:00 am - 11:45 am
This class is designed to enrich the Children’s Literature class listed above. The projects will directly correspond with the books being read for enhanced study of the stories.
